The Sega Game Gear, Sega’s first portable gaming device, was released in North America on April 26, 1991. The technology behind the Game Gear far surpassed Nintendo’s competing Game Boy hand-held console at the time.
- Specifications The Game Gear used a 3.2-inch LCD screen that could display up to 32 colors at a time. A mono speaker was built in, although stereo sound would activate with headphone use. Unlike the Game Boy, the Game Gear included a backlight that allowed viewability in low-light situations.
- Games Similar to the Sega Genesis, the Game Gear used cartridges to store game data. Approximately 30 licensed games and eight unlicensed games were released during the Game Gear’s life span. Games cost between to and would represent the popular gaming genres of the time including sports, fighting and side shooters.
- Accessories The Sega Master Gear/Genesis Converter allowed the use of actual Sega Genesis cartridges in the Game Gear. Other notable accessories included a rechargeable battery pack that expanded battery life up to eight hours, the Game Gear TV Tuner that allowed you to connect the Game Gear to a TV, and the Gear-to-Gear Cable connector that enabled multiplayer game play between two Game Gears.
